Zomato’s product head joins e-pharmacy 1mg as COO

Zomato’s chief product officer Tanmay Saksena, who quit the restaurant discovery platform earlier this year, is joining health care startup 1mg as its chief operating officer (COO).

Having spent almost a decade in Silicon Valley, Saksena returned to India in January 2015 to launch Zomato’s food ordering business.

Saksena, along with Namita Gupta, who came from social networking site Facebook, and Ashish Goel were some of the prominent hires made by Zomato at a time when other highly valued tech startups like Flipkart and Snapdeal were also luring talent back from the Bay Area. Punit Soni who came from Google to head Flipkart’s product strategy quit recently and so did Zomato’s Gupta.

The Sequoia Capitalbacked 1mg raised Rs 100 crore led by US-based investment fund Maverick Capital Ventures and is in the process of hiring senior level executives to help it grow the business. Saksena said he was making the shift from food to healthcare, seeing the huge opportunity that exists in the space and how technology can disrupt it.

“India is still a very exciting market, but we need more time to see its full potential. My core focus would be to growing the biggest revenue contributor for 1mg which is the e-pharmacy business and expanding into new cities,” he said.
