IPL: Virat Kohli breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s record

Breaking or reaching closer to Sachin Tendulkar’s record in international cricket is still a distant dream for Virat Kohli, but the Indian Test skipper has managed to surpass his senior compatriot’s Indian Premier League record as captain.

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Kohli became the first captain to score more than 500 runs in IPL in three different seasons and in doing so, he broke Sachin’s record, who had achieved this feat twice as captain of Mumbai Indians. Sachin plundered 618 runs in the 2010 edition and 553 runs in the 2011 edition of the IPL.

Needing 67 runs to complete 500 runs in IPL 2016 before RCB’s match against Rising Pune Supergiants on Saturday, Kohli scored his second century of the season as he notched up an unbeaten 108 off 58 balls to help his team chase down 192-run target. With this ton, Kohli also became the first captain to score two hundreds in a season. Kohli has so far scored 541 runs in eight matches with an average of 90.16.

This was the fourth instance overall, Kohli has crossed the 500-run mark in the IPL. He had amassed 634 runs in 2013, which is also the highest ever aggregate by a captain in the IPL, and 505 runs in 2015 edition as RCB’s captain. Before taking the reign as RCB skipper, Kohli had accumulated 557 runs in 2011.
