Heena wins India’s ninth shooting quota for Rio

Heena Sidhu’s wait for a ticket to Rio Olympics was over when the pistol shooter won gold and a quota in the 10m air pistol event at the Asian Olympic shooting qualifier at Dr Karni Singh Range on Wednesday.

Heena, who was shooting in her pet event, topped the qualification round with a score of 387 and later in the final, she shot 199.4 to finish with gold medal and one quota place out of two available.

Out of eight finalist, four were either already qualified for Rio or their countries had reached the maximum limit of two quotas in the event. For Heena, the competition was with two Irani shooters, Sebghatollahi Golnoush and Elham Harijani along with Singapore’s The Xiu Hong. While Golnoush finished fourth with the quota, Hong and Harijani were eliminated earlier in the final.

The silver went to Chinese Taipei’s Tien Chia Chen with a score of 198.1, whiel the bronze was won by Korea’s Gim Yun Mi (177.9). Both the shooters were ineligible for quota places.
