Mahakali Caves


The Mahakali Caves are located on a hill called Udaygiri Hill, in Andheri, the western suburb of Mumbai City.

The Mahakali Caves, which were known as Kondivita Caves earlier, are a group of 19 rock-cuts caves, were built during the Buddhist period.

It is a set of 19 rock-cut caves that was built between 1st century and 6th century. Carved out of a solid basalt rock, this religious edifice has caves, rock-cut cisterns and remnants of other structures.

Four of the 19 caves lie in the northwest, while the remaining 15 are on the south-eastern side. Most of the caves here are viharas and cells for Buddhist monks. Cave 9 is the largest cave in the Mahakali Caves, and features seven depictions of the Buddhist mythology.

This particular cave also has a Chaitya– a Buddhist shrine with a stupa. The quaint beauty, religious prominence and mesmeric rock-cut architecture of Mahakali Caves have attracted and continue to attract countless people from all corners of the country.
